ABOUT ALABAMA INSTITUTE FOR DEAF AND BLIND

The Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind (AIDB) is the worlds most comprehensive education, rehabilitation, and service program serving individuals of all ages who are Deaf, Blind, DeafBlind and multidisabled and their families. Founded in 1858, AIDB serves more than 36,000 infants, toddlers, children, adults, and seniors with hearing and vision loss throughout Alabama each year. Our services span a lifetime including five campuses in Talladega and a statewide network of ten regional centers with programs that range from early and senior intervention, traditional and nontraditional education services in residential and outreach settings, and a manufacturing facility that is the states largest employer of adults who are Blind and Deaf.

ABOUT THE ROLE The Director of Nursing is responsible for the comprehensive medical program operations at the Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind. This includes the supervision of nursing personnel at the Alabama School for the Blind, Alabama School for the Deaf, Helen Keller School of Alabama, E.H. Gentry, and the Alabama Industries for the Blind. Additionally, they are tasked with supervising the Dental Hygienist and coordinating the scheduling and operations of the Dental Clinic. With a thorough approach to planning and execution, the Director of Nursing ensures the seamless implementation of care plans and competent management of medication administration for all students under our care. The Director of Nursing should demonstrate an understanding of regulatory compliance and current school nursing trends while striving to ensure the nursing department remains innovative with its methods and tools and adheres to best practices and laws regarding nursing and education in the state of Alabama.

The Director of Nursing should have excellent verbal and written communication skills to utilize when communicating with families, the general public, and/or any state or agency officials as a representative of AIDB.

In advancing the mission and vision of AIDB, the Director of Nursing must lead with integrity, empathy, and a strong commitment to excellence, ensuring our nursing departments consistently deliver high-quality care to those we serve.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
  • Must possess current, unencumbered Registered Nurse licensure by the Alabama Board of Nursing.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of successful relevant experience in supervision and/or other related professional supervisory experience.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of recent successful work experience in nursing.
  • Must have strong interpersonal and written communication skills.
  • Must be CPR/First Aid certified by the American Heart Association and must become a certified instructor within the first twelve (12) months of employment.
  • Must be knowledgeable regarding current laws and practices related to the provision of school health services, including current special education requirements and issues.
  • Must be willing to accept after-hours calls and occasionally fill in for absent nurses.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master of Science in Nursing.
  • Must possess current, unencumbered Registered Nurse licensure by the Alabama Board of Nursing.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of successful relevant experience in supervision and/or other related professional supervisory experience.
  • Minimum of seven (7) years of recent successful work experience in nursing.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Responsible for the daily operation of the AIDB Nursing Clinic and nursing stations.

Supervises the nursing staff per established regulations and standard practices of the nursing profession.

Supervises the Administrative Assistant, Dental Hygienist, and Dental Clinic coordination.

Assists the staff in decision-making and executing doctors recommendations and orders.
