The Center for Human Phenomic Science (CHPS) is seeking a Research Medical Technician to join the team @ The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP).

Summary:

The Research Medical Technician is a key member of the patient and family care team. The Research Medical Technician provides patient care and administrative support and performs research tasks under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN) and/or interdisciplinary care team.

Responsibilities:

• Provides patient care and administrative support and performs research tasks as directed by the RN and/or interdisciplinary care team. Reports results, outcomes, and other pertinent information accurately and in a timely manner to the responsible RN and/or interdisciplinary care team.

• Provides patient- and family-centered care with consideration to growth and development, cultural and religious needs, individual preferences, and customer service standards.

• Obtains measurements such as body weight/height, vital signs, and intake and output. Performs point-of-care testing in accordance with hospital requirements. Applies cardiac monitoring devices as directed and performs basic troubleshooting.

• Attends to physical and emotional needs of patients and assists with activities of daily living such as nutrition, hygiene, and elimination. Adheres to unit initiatives to support patient safety and comfort such as maintaining a quiet environment, performing hourly patient rounds, and preventing falls

. • Facilitates patient flow and turnover of patient care rooms. Maintains a clean patient care environment.

• Educates patients and families prior to medical examinations and procedures. Performs procedures such as phlebotomy and 12-Lead EKG. Prepares supplies and equipment necessary to assist medical providers with procedures.

• Uses the appropriate means when transporting, transferring, repositioning, or mobilizing patients to best serve their comfort and safety. Utilizes proper body mechanics and Safe Patient Handling techniques.

• Follows principles of infection control & prevention. Follows standard or isolation precautions as needed. Performs low-level and high-level disinfection as needed.

• Collects and labels biospecimens including blood, urine, stool, saliva, and sputum per institutional guidelines and/or research protocols. Processes research samples in accordance with laboratory manuals and ensures laboratory manuals are kept up to date.

• Orders and stocks clinical and laboratory supplies and removes outdated items. Checks, cleans, and performs quality controls and calibration on equipment per manufacturer and departmental guidelines. Maintains regulatory logs for eyewash stations, scales, refrigerators/freezers, and other equipment as directed by the Nurse Manager. Ensures laboratory and biological safety standards are followed.

• Reviews incoming research protocols for specimen processing requirements and escalates to Nurse Manager or Clinical Practice Lead as needed.

• Completes billing documentation per departmental guidelines.

• Serves as an effective preceptor and mentor for new employees.

• Performs duties in accordance with Penn Medicine and entity values, policies, and procedures

• Other duties as assigned to support the unit, department, entity, and health system organization

Education/Experience:

  • HS Diploma/GED AND 1 +years experience in clinic, laboratory, and/or acute care facility.

  • CPR

  • Phlebotomy Certification/Phlebotomy skills

  • EKG experience

  • Basic computer knowledge and skills

PREFERRED:

  • CNA/Medical Assistant
