A Brief Overview

The Clinical Nutrition Supervisor assists in the oversight of the day to day operations of Stanford Health Care's Clinical Nutrition Department. Primary responsibilities include: supervising an established clinical nutrition team; initiating and collaborating on continuous quality improvement projects and integrating results into evidence-based practice; reviewing and updating policies and procedures; facilitating human resource functions including recruiting, hiring, staffing, mentoring, precepting interns, handling conflict resolution and corrective action; interacts with department leadership, professional and frontline staff; and maintaining professional competency and skills required for professional practice.

The Clinical Nutrition Supervisor functions independently to provide nutrition care to patients, including complex patient types, e.g., intensive care units, transplant, cystic fibrosis and specialty clinics, etc., and works with the most complex patient types greater than 50% of the time at an advanced practice level (proficient/expert). Clinical Nutrition Supervisor serves as a role model, resource, and leader for the Level I, II, and III dietitians.

What you will do

  • Performs all functions of Clinical Dietitian level I, II, III.

  • Maintains advanced clinical competency and provides direct patient care in proportion to specific area needs.

  • Assists in the oversight of daily operations of Clinical Nutrition, including but not limited to application of Stanford Operating System, maintenance of relevant policies, procedures, and standards of care, patient care coordination, and facilitation of team and program meetings, marketing, research, maintenance of contact with professional organizations and implementation of best practices.

  • Participates in the active daily management of department resources to help meet the needs of the patients and Stanford Health Care.

  • Assumes supervisory responsibility for staff members as assigned including hiring, onboarding, training, coaching, scheduling and mentoring of new staff members to ensure on-going competency.

  • Conducts performance reviews including new hire, annual and performance improvement evaluations of Clinical Dietitian levels I, II, and III and the Nutrition Technician/Dietetic Technician, Registered (DTR), and dietetic interns.

  • May assume responsibilities for manager/director in reporting or representing the manager/director at meetings, etc., in the manager’s/director’s absence.

  • Performs review of staff documentation to assure quality, regulatory, and fiscal compliance. Ensures staff's ability to meet all documentation requirements. Provides appropriate training as needed. Assists in preparing staff and areas for regulatory review and surveys TJC (The Joint Commission), DHS (Department of Health Services) etc.

  • Other lead duties as assigned.

  • Note: Clinical Nutrition Supervisor FTE allocation: up to 50% supervisor time with remaining time allocated to clinical work. Clinical Nutrition Supervisor position quantity and availability is also based on departmental need and budgetary approval processes and is attained through an application process.

Education Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in dietetics, foods and nutrition, or a work-related discipline/field from an accredited college or university.

  • Completion of a didactic program in dietetics and supervised practice program approved by the Accreditation Council for Education and Dietetics (formerly known as the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education).

Experience Qualifications

  • Minimum of three (3) years of directly related work experience, including two years in a specialty area providing care to complex patients.

  • A Master’s degree in dietetics, nutrition, or specialty area is preferred. Specialty certification (Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE), Certified Nutrition Support Specialist (CNSC), Certified Specialist in Oncology (CSO), etc.).

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the Nutrition Care Process as it relates to the needs of complex patient populations and acutely ill patients/clients and ability to apply all steps of the process.

  • Comprehensive knowledge and application of nutrition services and medical nutrition therapy in patients, especially in a specialty area/areas.

  • Rapidly recognizes norms and deviations from norms without considering a number of unproductive alternatives.

  • Demonstrated flexibility and advanced priority-setting skills.

  • General knowledge of electronic medical record, nutrient analysis, word processing, and spreadsheet software.

  • Ability to communicate effectively in written, verbal and electronic form to patients, public, hospital/clinic and medical staff, and physicians.

  • Ability to function independently on assigned patient care units and/or outpatient clinics.

  • Demonstrated excellence in counseling skills and the ability to relate to a multi-ethnic community with varied learning levels.

  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills to integrate facts, informed opinions, and observations.

  • Decision making, problem solving, and collaboration.

  • Strong interpersonal skills to establish productive working relationships with multidisciplinary team and support services.

Licenses and Certifications

  • RD - Registered Dietitian required

  • CDE - Certified Diabetes Educator preferred

  • CNSC - Certified Nutrition Support Clinician preferred

  • CSON - Cert Spec Oncology Nutrit preferred

  • RDN - Registered Dietitian Nutritionist preferred

Base Pay Scale: Generally starting at $59.14 - $78.37 per hour

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training. This pay scale is not a promise of a particular wage.
