Job Description

General Scope of Duties

The Assistant Dean will manage a portfolio of nationally competitive fellowships including, but not limited to, the Beinecke, Davis, Marshall, Mitchell, Watson, and Rhodes competitions as well as competitive internal fellowships, the ConnSSHARP and Myers awards. They will serve as the campus liaison for these awards, handling the interface with the fellowship organizations, which includes hosting campus visits, maintaining communication, and participating in ongoing training and workshops sponsored by these fellowship bodies. The Assistant Dean will also represent Connecticut College at regional and national conferences, while contributing to discussions around best practices in the professional field of Fellowships advising.

General Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support a strategic vision that makes preparation for fellowship awards accessible to all Connecticut Colleges students

  • This means continual outreach efforts to the student body

  • Ongoing meetings with students to help them develop fellowship ideas and projects

  • Intensive one–on-one mentoring and reviewing of drafts and materials as students develop their fellowship applications

  • Coaching and interview preparation, including mock interviews

  • Work in close partnership with the Director of the Walter Commons for Global Study and Engagement and International Fellowships on coordinating their fellowship activities involving student recruitment, support, and preparation

  • Manage a portfolio of time-sensitive internal and external fellowship competitions through all stages of the award cycle

  • Cultivation, organization, and chairing of faculty and staff selection committees for the various competitive fellowships

  • Actively engage in outreach and communication about fellowship opportunities for students by using different media and strategies to spread information to students, faculty, staff, and alumni

    • Serve as a representative to the Office of Marketing and Communication, Advancement, and Office of Grants and Academic Advancement on matters related to fellowships
  • Serve as the campus liaison for the external fellowships enumerated above, which includes representing the College at regional and national workshops, trainings, and conferences, professional associations, and peer institutions, while contributing to national and global discussions around best practices in the professional field of Fellowships. This is also including hosting campus visits from the representatives of the fellowship organizations

    Education and Skills

  • Master’s Degree required; doctorate preferred in a related field and five years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.

  • Superior written and verbal communication skills to present to multiple constituents, including students, staff, faculty, donors, and University leadership, as well as database and computer skills.

  • Superior student mentoring and coaching skills, especially with experience working with first generation college students

  • Demonstrated ability to work with students, faculty, donors, and other internal and external constituents to promote fair and equitable practices in advising, programming, and mentoring practices.

  • Knowledge of current trends in the field of fellowships advising and demonstrated ability to undertake the management of large-scale, deadline-driven competitive fellowship opportunities.

  • Proven ability to work with a varied range of stakeholders, often under tight time pressure, with an appreciation and respect for the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

  • Ability to engage with diverse individuals (age, gender, nationality, race/ethnicity, profession, sexual orientation, etc.) in strategic planning, establishing best practices, program planning, the provision of resources, and advising. Demonstrated ability to work at a high standard in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.

    Preferred Qualifications

Engagement in one or more professional development organizations, such as the National Association of Fellowships Advisors is preferred. Experience managing high-volume and deadline driven application processes is essential. Master’s Degree required, Ph.D., or another advanced qualification is a plus. Personal experience with having held a competitive fellowship would be highly desirable.
