MACON COUNTY Transit Driver in FRANKLIN, North Carolina

Position: Transit Operator (Permanent Part-time / Full-time possibility after July 1) Department: Transit Position Number: 493020 Grade: 22 Starting Salary: $15.2328 per hour

This position also qualifies for Recruitment and Retention Pay of an additional $2.00 for actual regular hours worked through October 20, 2024, or a maximum of $14,000.00, whichever comes first. The Recruitment and Retention pay is received on six month intervals ending in April and October. **Posting Date: May10, 2024 Closing Date: Until Filled

General Definition or Description of Work: Performs intermediate semiskilled work transporting citizens to designated sites, assistingwith boarding and exiting vehicle, collecting fees, maintaining the vehicle, and relatedwork as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of theTransit Operations Supervisor.

Essential Functions

  • Operates transit vehicle on an assigned route and schedule.
  • Performs daily inspections of vehicle; reports defects and/or maintenance needs.
  • Transports citizens, children and the physically and mentally disabled to doctors, onbusiness or shopping trips, outings, points of interest, employment and daycare; returnsthem to their homes.
  • Assists passengers entering and leaving the vehicle, when necessary; carries packages forpassengers when necessary; operates wheelchair lift.
  • Collects fares and transfers; prepares trip records regarding fares, mileage, passengers,times, etc.
  • Provides information and directions to passengers and the general public.
  • Operates two-way radio and/or cell phone; reports unusual traffic conditions, buscondition, passenger emergencies or other problems.
  • Uses mobile tablets to record miles and fare collections
  • Works non-traditional hours including early mornings, late evenings, and occasionalweekends. May require occasional overnight travel.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Thorough knowledge of regional traffic rules and regulations; thorough knowledge of thegeography of the County; ability to operate passenger vehicles and related equipmentsafely and efficiently; ability to remain alert and to remain calm during periods of stress; ability to deal courteously and tactfully with the public; ability to keep records andprepare reports; ability to read, write and speak the English language; ability to performsimple math functions such as adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing; ability to read maps; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships withassociates and the general public.

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or GED

Schedule

  • Monday through Friday

Special Requirements:

  • A valid drivers license
