Cleveland Clinic Surgical Pathology Procurement Technician in Cleveland, Ohio

The person in this role will have to carry an on-call pager at least one week per month and work 1-2 holidays per year.

As a Surgical Pathology Procurement Technician, you will receive training and instruction in surgical pathology technician and tissue procurement skills (processing, describing, dissecting small tissue specimens, and preparing frozen section slides for rapid diagnosis). You will access and perform data entry of patient and specimen information, perform general lab functions, maintain laboratory equipment, supplies and records.

  • Has knowledge of anatomy and physiology sufficient to identify, dissect and describe tissue specimens.

  • Has good judgment to evaluate biopsy specimens and select protocols.

  • Has knowledge of medical terminology specific to anatomic pathology.

  • Has strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Has excellent customer service and organizational skills.

  • Can interact at all levels of the organization and work independently as well as problem solve, and trouble shoot.

The person in this role will have to carry an on-call pager at least one week per month and work 1-2 holidays per year.

Responsibilities:

  • Identifies, measures, weighs and describes tissue specimens.

  • Processes special tissue studies per protocol.

  • Prepares frozen sections for rapid diagnosis and specimens for processing.

  • Receives specimens, assigns accession number, distributes and performs patient and specimen data entry.

  • Completes quality assurance documentation for requisition, specimen and processing problems.

  • Ensures that billing is performed in a timely manner.

  • Performs radiographs of gross specimens and develops film.

  • Receives training and instruction in gross specimen photography.

  • De-calcifies mineralized specimens and prepares for storage.

  • Transports and processes specimens and maintains records.

  • Directs and prioritizes the activities of Tissue Procurement Technicians as they relate to diagnostic requirements, regulatory guidelines (HIPAA, OSHA, JCAHO, CAP, IRB) and external tissue procurement contracts (CHTN, COG, SWOG).

  • Assists with instruction regarding surgical pathology procurement techniques and procedures.

  • Performs general lab functions as needed and follows laboratory procedures.

  • Functions as a primary liaison with Clinical Trial Research Coordinators.

  • Reviews operating room schedule and consented patient lists to identify all potential tissue for procurement for clinical trials and other research activities.

  • Picks-up and deliver specimens to surgical pathology.

  • Dissects tissue for clinical trials and other research. Embeds tissue for sectioning, cuts sections using a cryostat, collects shavings for extraction of nucleic acids and proteins, stains and cover-slips tissue sections.

  • Enters data on tissue procured into Research Tissue Procurement App. and CoPath. Maintains records of services performed.

  • Performs preventive maintenance on equipment and maintains work area.

  • Resolve technical and procurement problems.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical or biological science from a four-year college or university is required. OR Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university AND have education and training equivalent to high complexity testing personnel per CLIA. See Code of Federal Regulations, Title 42 *493.1489(b)(2)(ii) Standard; High Complexity Testing Personnel Qualifications ,

  • Diploma and/or transcripts must be provided.

  • Education will be verified.

  • Education outside of the United States requires diploma/transcripts translated into English and proof of foreign equivalency from by an HHS approved agency or nationally recognized organization such as NACES (National Association Credential Evaluation Services, Inc) or AICE (Association of International Credential Evaluators, Inc).

Certifications:

  • None required.

Complexity of Work:

  • Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.

  • Must be able to work in a highly technical, stressful environment and take appropriate action.

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires manual dexterity and visual acuity required when handling gross specimens and utilizing instrumentation, ability to safely handle potentially infectious patient specimens, carcinogenic substances, odorous and other hazardous materials to which they may be regularly exposed.

  • Typical physical demands include ability to sit or stand extensively and frequent walking, occasional lifting or carrying of 5 to 40 pounds.

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
