UL, LLC Director, Field Engineering, Specialty Services Operations in Chicago, Illinois

The Director will lead Specialty Field Engineering services. This is an exciting opportunity to write the next chapter for this specialty field engineering organization through refreshed strategy, stronger alignment with our Customer Operating Units and organizational transformation. The Director will create the foundation for UL Solutions accelerated growth in field-based engineering services globally.

The Director, Field Specialty Engineering Services will be responsible for:

  • Where to play / how to win: define overall strategic framework for UL Solutions field-based specialty engineering services and drive alignment with our Customer Operating Units. Ensure strategy relies on strong demand drivers and delivers competitive advantage for UL Solutions and align Long Range Plan strategy with our Customer Operating Units.

  • Portfolio management: understand which services to prioritize for growth, which services to turn around for profitability, and which services to sun set.

  • Work across UL Solutions to identify opportunities to operate more effectively at the enterprise level by consolidating specialty field-based engineering teams into one single organization.

  • Work with our Strategy team to identify areas of inorganic growth and execute accordingly.

  • In partnership with Customer Operating Unit leaders, the Director will have specific revenue and profitability targets for each service line

  • Enhance current E2E process and technology to align with enterprise processes and to ensure data alignment with Customer Operating Units.

  • Improve quote TAT.

  • Continuously monitor and evaluate opportunities to improve cost structure and drive standardization to achieve efficiencies.

  • Support growth across regions, which requires strong collaboration and alignment.

  • Ensure there is a process to validate new business opportunities.

  • Monitor NPS and drive action plans accordingly.

  • Drive a high-performing team by managing the performance and development of team members.

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Electrical Engineer preferred.

  • Knowledge of field-based engineering services in North America with deep understanding (and connections) with AHJs and Code authorities

  • Ability to work and lead in a matrixed organizational structure.

  • Proven business leadership role (driving a business including setting a target and leading both strategy / sales and operations)

  • Strong commercial orientation, managed a portfolio of services (differentiation between growth and sunset), drives ambitious goals and keen to win in the market.

  • Experience with process improvement (sales and/or operations). Proven ability to drive change (people / process / technology)

  • Experience in relevant technical areas for Specialty Field (Field Evaluations, Building Inspections) rooted in EIA / BE type work and technical knowledge.

  • Relationships with NA-based AHJs / Code Authorities.

  • Proven interpersonal and influencing skills, with the ability to build credible relationships with multiple functions in complex / ambiguous environments.

  • Experience working with diverse, global teams strongly preferred.

  • Experience managing and delivering clear, impactful communications to internal and external stakeholders.

  • Ability to inspire, motivate, and influence behaviors to help change across an organization.

  • Experience building high-performing and highly collaborative teams.
