Urban Farming and Landscape Design Apprenticeship

Are you a high school junior passionate about Urban Agriculture and Landscape Design? Our Urban Farming and Landscape Design Apprenticeship is the perfect opportunity to gain hands-on experience and classroom instruction in this exciting field.

Program Highlights:

On-the-Job Training: Gain 450 hours of practical experience in urban farming and landscape design. You'll work alongside experienced professionals, learning the ins and outs of sustainable farming practices, landscape planning, and maintenance.

Classroom Instruction: Participate in 144 hours of structured classroom learning. This includes coursework on plant biology, soil science, environmental sustainability, and design principles.

Position Overview:

We are seeking a passionate and dedicated Urban Farming Teaching Assistant to join our team and support our urban farming program. The ideal candidate possesses a strong enthusiasm for urban farming and landscape design.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the lead instructor to plan and execute engaging urban farming lessons and activities that align with the curriculum and learning objectives.
  • Assist in setting up and maintaining the urban farm, including preparing planting beds, caring for plants, and managing garden infrastructure.
  • Guide students in planting, cultivating, and harvesting a variety of crops, showcasing organic and sustainable farming techniques.
  • Provide clear instructions and demonstrations to students on various urban farming practices, from composting and pest management to irrigation and soil health.
  • Foster a positive and inclusive learning environment by offering guidance, feedback, and support to students of diverse backgrounds and skill levels.
  • Supervise and oversee students during hands-on activities, ensuring their safety and adherence to established guidelines.
  • Engage students in discussions and reflections on the connections between urban farming, food systems, environmental sustainability, and community resilience.
  • Assist with the maintenance of garden tools, equipment, and supplies, ensuring their proper functioning and organization.
  • Collaborate with the lead instructor to develop educational materials, resources, and assessments to enhance students' learning experiences.
  • Participate in school-wide events, workshops, and outreach initiatives related to urban farming and sustainable living.
  • Foster a sense of curiosity, wonder, and respect for nature while instilling a lifelong appreciation for urban agriculture and its benefits.
  • Stay informed about current trends, research, and advancements in urban farming practices and sustainable agriculture.

Qualifications:

Must be a Junior in high school.

Must be on track to graduate.

Must have completed required community service hours.

Must be able to pass a background check. You will be working around students.

Previous experience in urban farming, gardening, or teaching is advantageous.

Enthusiasm for sustainable agriculture, urban farming, and environmental education.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to connect with students and effectively convey information.

Patience, adaptability, and a genuine interest in nurturing students' growth and learning.

Basic knowledge of horticulture, plant biology, and sustainable farming practices.

Ability to work collaboratively as part of an educational team.

Physical fitness and ability to perform various outdoor tasks, including lifting, bending, and working in different weather conditions.
